Bandwidth And Web Hosting - an article on Affordable Web Hosting Reviews 4U by Dave Marrow. Read all web hosting articles in Web Hosting R4u.
When selecting a new web hosting provider there are a number of things you
need to consider: bandwidth, web space or storage, the amount of email accounts
you are allowed, domain forwarders, sub domains, and all the extras. So
comparing web hosting companies can be challenging.
Luckily, web hosting is pretty inexpensive to begin with, so it shouldn't
break the bank. But with all of the different options probably the most
important thing to think about is bandwidth you are given and the rates for an
upgrade.
Any time someone visits your website, their computer actually has to download
all of the images, text and so on. This uses bandwidth to transmit the data, and
most low-end, starter web hosting packages limit the amount of bandwidth you
need.
If you have mostly just a text-based website, like a blog, you will not need
a lot of bandwidth to start with. If you have big files that people will be
constantly downloading, or a lot of refreshing of the page, more bandwidth will
be needed in order to transmit the data. Website forums, or message boards, for
example, tend to use a lot of bandwidth because there visitors need to refresh
the page a lot in order to see what the new comments are and dig in and out of
the discussions.
The other thing to consider is not how much bandwidth costs now for your
starter package, but how much it costs to upgrade to the next level. Many web
hosting companies lure you in with great teaser rates for the smallest web
hosting package, knowing full well that once you start getting traffic you'll
need to upgrade to the next package, which may be overpriced. So make sure
you're not only shopping for the cheapest web hosting package, but that you are
also comparing the costs to upgrade.
